Swimming beaches to explore in the western U.P.

Looking for a place to cool down this summer in the Porcupine Mountains and Ontonagon County? The western Upper Peninsula is home to miles and miles of Lake Superior shoreline—here’s where to go to dip your toes (or take a plunge) in the refreshing waters of the greatest Great Lake.

Union Bay

Head west from Silver City along M-107 (also known as the 10th Engineers Memorial Highway) and you’ll not only find some stunning Lake Superior scenery, but you’ll also discover 2 miles of sandy beaches as you make your way toward Union Bay in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The beach is accessible at several points along the highway.

Ontonagon Township Park

Located one mile east of downtown Ontonagon, this park is home to a pristine section of Lake Superior shoreline with access from several parking areas. Leashed pets are allowed on the beach.

Local lodging properties

Looking for your own private section of beach? Many of the lodging properties in the Porcupine Mountains and Ontonagon County sit right on the shores of Lake Superior or offer easy access to the lake.

Other beaches can be found at Green Township Park and Black River Harbor Recreation Area (at the end of the Black River Scenic Parkway).
